How to Set Up Alipay as a Foreigner
No Chinese bank account needed. Link your foreign card directly to Alipay International — accepted at most shops, restaurants, and transport in China.
Download Alipay
Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play in your home country. Make sure you have it before arriving — downloads can be slow or restricted in China.
Add your bank card
Go to "Me" → "Bank Cards" → tap the + icon. Enter your card number, the name exactly as it appears on the card, expiry date, and CVV. Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club are supported. American Express is NOT supported.
Verify your identity with passport
Go to "Me" → "Bank Cards" → "Verify Identity". Select passport verification. Alipay will use face recognition to scan your passport — it automatically reads your full name, passport number, date of birth, and expiry date. Then complete a face scan to confirm.
Wait for verification
Verification usually completes within a few minutes, but can take up to 24 hours. You'll get a notification when it's done. Once verified, your account is valid for 90 days from first use — you can re-verify to extend.
Test with a small payment
Scan any merchant's Alipay QR code and pay ¥1–5. Transactions under ¥200 (~$28) are fee-free. Above ¥200, a 3% international transaction fee applies.

Troubleshooting
❌ Card keeps getting declined
✅ Call your bank to enable international fintech / online transactions. Some banks block Chinese payment platforms by default. Try a physical Visa or Mastercard — virtual and prepaid cards often fail.
❌ Face/passport verification fails
✅ Ensure good lighting with no glare on the passport photo page. Hold the passport flat and steady. Try in a different location or on a different device.
❌ "Service not available in your region"
✅ Turn off your VPN before setting up Alipay. The app detects VPNs and blocks setup. Turn it back on after completing setup.
❌ American Express not working
✅ Amex is not supported by Alipay. Use a Visa or Mastercard instead. If you only have Amex, consider the Alipay TourCard (prepaid, 5% top-up fee, ¥100/500/1000 denominations).
