Get China Ready
Before You Land
The only checklist you need to avoid the most common problems foreigners face in China โ payments, internet, and navigation.
Stay Connected
Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram are blocked in China. Get an eSIM with data + a VPN before you board. All plans below work in mainland China.
Set Up Mobile Payments
Cash is rarely accepted. Both Alipay and WeChat Pay now support foreign bank cards โ set them up before landing. Takes 5 minutes each.
Navigate Like a Local
Google Maps works poorly in China. Download Amap (้ซๅพทๅฐๅพ) for navigation and Didi for taxis. Cache your cities offline before you board.

Common Questions
Do I need a VPN in China?
Yes. Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western apps are blocked. Download a VPN before you arrive โ it won't work once you're in China without one already installed.
Can foreigners use Alipay and WeChat Pay?
Yes, since 2023. Both Alipay and WeChat Pay allow foreigners to link a foreign Visa or Mastercard. Setup takes about 5 minutes each and works at most places that accept QR payments.
What eSIM should I get?
Airalo, Nomad, Holafly, and Saily are all reliable options. Choose a plan with at least 5GB. Note: eSIM data alone won't bypass the firewall โ you still need a VPN for blocked apps.
Is cash still useful?
Less and less. Most restaurants, transport, and shops prefer QR payment. Carry a small amount of RMB for very small vendors or emergencies.
Should I set up Alipay or WeChat Pay?
Both if possible. Alipay is better for shopping and services. WeChat Pay is more common for peer-to-peer transfers and some smaller shops. Having both means you're covered everywhere.
Do I need to download maps offline?
Yes. Download Amap or Baidu Maps and cache your destination city offline before landing. Google Maps has limited functionality in China.
