1

Download WeChat

Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play before arriving in China. Create an account with your phone number. WeChat is also China's main messaging app, so you'll use it beyond just payments.

2

Open WeChat Pay

Tap "Me" at the bottom right โ†’ "Services" โ†’ "Wallet". This opens WeChat Pay. If you don't see "Wallet", tap the search icon and search for "WeChat Pay".

3

Verify your identity with passport

Tap "Add Card" โ†’ you'll be asked to verify your identity first. Select your country, then enter your full name exactly as it appears on your passport, and your passport number. WeChat may also ask for a face scan.

โš ๏ธ Use exactly the same name as on your passport โ€” middle names included. Mismatches cause verification failures.
4

Add your foreign bank card

After identity verification, enter your Visa or Mastercard number, expiry date, and CVV. The card must be in your name and match the identity you verified. Virtual and prepaid cards are not supported.

5

Verify with your bank

Your bank will send an SMS or require in-app approval. Complete this step. If it fails, log in to your bank app and make sure international online transactions and fintech payments are enabled.

6

Test with a small payment

Scan any merchant's WeChat Pay QR code and pay ยฅ1โ€“5 to confirm everything is working. You can also tap "Receive" to generate your own QR code for others to pay you โ€” useful for splitting bills.

Troubleshooting

โŒ Card declined or not supported

โœ… Call your bank to enable international fintech and online transactions โ€” some banks block Chinese payment platforms. Try a physical Visa or Mastercard. Virtual, prepaid, and Amex cards will not work.

โŒ Real-name verification fails

โœ… Make sure your name matches your passport exactly, including middle names and any hyphens. Restart the app and try again in good lighting. Some users have success switching to mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.

โŒ "This service is not available in your region"

โœ… Turn off your VPN before setting up WeChat Pay. The app detects VPNs and blocks setup. You can turn it back on after completing setup.

โŒ Daily limit too low

โœ… Foreign cards default to a ยฅ3,000 daily limit. You can request a limit increase in WeChat Pay settings โ†’ "Payment Management" once the account has been active for a few days.

โŒ "Account restricted" after setup

โœ… This sometimes happens on new accounts. Use the account for a small payment first โ€” the restriction usually lifts within 24 hours after first use.

๐Ÿ’ก Also set up Alipay โ€” some shops only accept one or the other. Alipay setup guide โ†’
